By Jared Greenleaf -- Gaylord Herald Times INDIAN RIVER — The Johannesburg-Lewiston varsity softball team suffered its first loss in Ski Valley play, but still came out of Monday with a split against Inland Lakes during a doubleheader at Cooperation Park in Indian River. A 10-run fifth inning helped propel the Cardinals to a 12-6 victory in the opener. Leading the Cardinals with two hits apiece were Sydney Townsend (double, three RBI, run), Jamie Burke (double, two RBI, two runs) and Emma Johnson (double, RBI, run). Jayden Marlatt homered, knocked in two runs and scored twice, while Raegan Sides (RBI, run), Kennedy Johnson (RBI) and Autumn Vermilya (two runs) each had a hit. Cassie Tallman crossed the plate twice. Marlatt was the winning pitcher, striking out 10, allowing four hits and walking one in a six-inning complete game. However, the Cardinals would suffer their first conference loss as the Bulldogs fought back to earn a split with a 9-4 victory in the nightcap. The Bulldogs capitalized with a seven-run fifth inning to take control of the contest. For JoBurg, Marlatt had two hits, including a double, and knocked in a run. Emma Johnson (RBI,) Sides (RBI) and Kennedy Johnson (run) registered a hit apiece. Vermilya took the loss on the mound, striking out two, allowing seven hits and walking two in 4 1/3 innings pitched. Cards sweep past Rogers City Following Monday's doubleheader split with the Bulldogs, the Cardinals captured non-conference sweep over Rogers City with 4-0 and 14-13 victories on Tuesday. Marlatt had a strong performance on the mound, striking out 13, allowing three hits and walking two in six innings pitched. Offensively, Emma Johnson had two hits and scored a run, while Townsend doubled and knocked in two runs, Tallman had a hit and scored a run, and Kennedy Johnson had a hit. Burke scored two runs. The Cardinals, who had a big lead in game two, held off a late Rogers City charge to secure a one-run win. Burke led the Cardinals with three hits, including a triple, knocked in two runs and scored two runs, while Vermilya (double, three RBI, two runs), Emma Johnson (RBI, three runs) and Emily Crandell (RBI, two runs) also had two hits. Other Cardinals adding hits included Kennedy Johnson (RBI), Marlatt (two runs) and Jocelyn Tobias. Townsend scored a run. Vermilya pitched 5 1/3 innings to earn the win, striking out five, allowing seven hits and walking two. Marlatt got the save for the Cardinals, striking out the final Rogers City batter of the contest. As of Tuesday, May 18, the Cardinals have a record of 17-5, 9-1 Ski Valley this season.

This time, the Cardinals captured one of their wins in very dramatic fashion in what ended up being a sweep — 9-8 and 14-6 victories — over Leelanau St. Mary in a non-conference doubleheader on Monday. Trailing 7-3 going into the bottom of the fifth, the Cardinals (12-4) rallied to tie the game at 7-7. However, St. Mary retook the lead after scoring a run in the top of the sixth. After the Cardinals tied things up again, it was all up to Emma Johnson to deliver the late-game heroics. Johnson did just that, smacking a walk-off RBI single to give the Cardinals a thrilling come-from-behind victory in the opener. Johnson finished with a team-high three hits and scored three runs for the Cardinals, while Jamie Burke had two hits, an RBI and two runs scored, Reagan Sides added to hits, including a triple, and a run scored, and Jayden Marlatt tallied two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Emily Crandell (RBI), Cassie Tallman (RBI) and Autumn Vermilya (double, run) registered a hit apiece for JoBurg. Marlatt earned the win on the mound, pitching all six innings, striking out 12, allowing eight hits and walking one. The Cardinals kept things rolling in game two, opening up an 8-1 lead in the bottom of the third and never looking back to capture the sweep. Marlatt's three doubles, RBI and two runs scored fueled the JoBurg offense, which received two doubles and a run scored from Johnson, and two hits, two RBI and two runs scored from Crandell. Vermilya (double, two RBI, two runs), Sydney Townsend (triple, RBI, two runs) and Sides (double, RBI, two runs) all added hits for the Cardinals. Marlatt was the winning pitcher for JoBurg, striking out two and allowing one hit in 1 1/3 innings pitched. J-L softball captures Val Kapture tournament title JOHANNESBURG — The Johannesburg-Lewiston varsity softball team captured the Val Kapture tournament title in Johannesburg on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals earned a 9-6 victory over Roscommon in the opener, then ended the day with a 27-2 trouncing of Alcona to earn the title. Leading the offensive onslaught against Alcona was Emma Johnson, who had a team-high four hits with two RBI and four runs scored, while Sydney Townsend had three hits, three RBI and four runs scored, and Reagan Sides had two hits — including back-to-back home runs — two RBI and two runs scored. Adding two hits apiece were Jamie Burke (three RBI, five runs) and Autumn Vermilya (two RBI, run). Jayden Marlatt (two RBI, three runs) and Cassie Tallman (two runs) also tallied hits for the Cardinals. Marlatt, who was the winning pitcher, struck out eight and allowed two hits in three innings pitched. Marlatt smacked a two-run homer, knocked in three runs and scored two runs to lead the Cardinals in the win over Roscommon. The Cardinals received two hits from Emily Crandell (RBI, run), while Kennedy Johnson (two RBI), Sydney Townsend (two runs), Burke (RBI, run), Tallman (run) and Emma Johnson each had hits. Cardinals pound Bellaire, improve to 4-0 in Ski Valley BELLAIRE — The Johannesburg-Lewiston varsity softball team rolled to a Ski Valley doubleheader sweep over Bellaire with 20-0 and 19-3 victories on Thursday, April 29. Tossing a perfect game over three innings was pitcher Jayden Marlatt, who struck out five batters. Marlatt was also the Cardinals' top hitter, finishing with a triple, a double, five RBI and three runs scored. Autumn Vermilya (two RBI, two runs) had two hits, while Emily Crandell (four RBI, run) and Sydney Townsend (three RBI, four runs) added a hit apiece. Reagan Sides, Cassie Tallman, Kennedy Johnson and Shyla Rahn each scored a run. In the other contest, Crandell had two hits, five RBI and scored a run to lead the Comets in another dominating victory. The Cardinals received hits from Johnson (two RBI, two runs), Jamie Burke (three runs), Marlatt (three runs) and Sides (RBI). Vermilya knocked in two runs and scored two runs. Vermilya earned the win on the mound, striking out six, allowing four hits and walking one in four innings pitched. Johannesburg-Lewiston (8-4, 4-0 Ski Valley) was scheduled to host Central Lake in a conference doubleheader on Monday. Cardinals finish second at Mancelona softball tourney MANCELONA — The Johannesburg-Lewiston varsity softball team earned a second-place finish at the Mancelona tournament held on Saturday. While the Cardinals did suffer a 4-0 loss to Gladwin, they picked up a 5-4 victory over Mancelona in an eight-inning contest. Leading the Cardinals’ offense was Emily Crandell, who had three hits, three RBI and a run scored, while Reagan Sides tallied three hits and scored a run, and Sydney Townsend finished with two hits and a run scored. Jayden Marlatt and Cassie Tallman added a hit apiece. Marlatt was the winning pitcher, striking out 15 batters, allowing seven hits and walking two in eight innings pitched. In the loss against Gladwin, Kennedy Johnson, Marlatt, Townsend and Sides each registered a hit for the Cardinals. Autumn Vermilya, who took the loss on the mound, struck out four and allowed nine hits in six innings pitched.
